How to find the right nail file grit to file nails

The lower the grit, the coarser the file. The higher the grit, the finer and smoother it is.

80 Grit

  • Use for: Heavy-duty filing

  • Best for: Reducing length and bulk of hard gel, acrylic, or polygel enhancements

  • Not for: Natural nails – too coarse and damaging

100 Grit

  • Use for: Shaping and refining enhancements

  • Best for: Acrylics, hard gels, and polygel

  • Not for: Natural nails – still too abrasive

150 Grit

  • Use for: Shaping softer enhancements or prepping nail tips

  • Best for: Soft gels and tip blending

  • Caution: Too rough for the natural nail plate

180 Grit

  • Use for: Light shaping and surface smoothing

  • Best for: Prepping natural nails (gently), shaping gel overlays

  • Safe for: Natural nails if used gently

240 Grit

  • Use for: Final smoothing, prepping the natural nail

  • Best for: Light buffing before gel polish or regular polish

  • Very safe: Ideal for natural nails

400–600 Grit

  • Use for: Smoothing ridges and surface imperfections

  • Best for: Prepping nail beds for gel polish, removing minor scratches

1000–3000 Grit (Buffer Shine Files)

  • Use for: High-gloss shine without polish

  • Best for: Natural nails and final finishing on enhancements

  • Result: Salon-glossy nails without top coat
